Orvieto is one of the places we visited with our friends Eric & Carolyn in 2007. I took an iconic photo of Linny and Carolyn hanging out on a corner across from the cathedral. Linny wanted to replicate it, if we could, and Juliet volunteered to be Linny's corner partner. As you'll see. But Orvieto was memorable because of the duomo. We'd done the paid tour of the special murals, when we were first here, and been impressed. Meanwhile, some of the city's grittier backstories had caught our romantic attention.
We thought then that it was quite commercial, which means a mean Chamber of Commerce shining the lights on the city's history and still-standing treasures. It's just as well promoted now as then. The cathedral has been cleaned and repointed, which had us briefly confused because we recalled the dark layers of stone being green.
This time, we were less concerned with the church than with finding a quiet, thoughtfully prepared lunch. We did, and both of us did sketches of some of the church's architectural nether parts while we relaxed.
