The possibilities seemed virtually endless. When Robin & Donna Cody joined us in Uzes, we had the wonderful advantage of their deeper knowledge of France and Provence. One of the treats was a day with them in Les Concluses des Lussan, the formations, cliffs, and wild river gorge to our south. We'd been doing lots of walking, but here was a beautiful hike that we preceded with a bit of roaming through the hill town of Lussan. It was not only tiny and antique, but utterly quiet—as if deserted. We took in the grand view from the town and oriented ourselves to the surrounding hills with the large guide map posted in the square.
This was another of France's rugged areas. Which we loved about the whole of the French Southwest. Lots for great places that require a car that won't easily high-center. And beware of narrow. Why let guard rails mar your view of the abyss? Les Concluses is a rocky, serpentine gorge carved in a limestone plateau by the Aiguillan river, which is a very short tributary of the Cèze.
There were marvelous views from the trail head. The trail was in good condition and the descent was easy. More fascinating formations on the way down and later another perspective hiking back out. We could see many caves
and followed with a visit to the beautiful, larger town of Les Aubertes. There we chatted by a stream channeled through the town and bought ice cream to slake that obvious need.
