Barcelona might be our second city. It's the first for a vibrant slice of humanity. We came because Barcelona has a history of going its own way, and not just as a city of the Basques. It has had an independent streak that doesn't quit, and I love the place for the raucous melange of tradition and radicalism, its art and artifice.
We've now visited here three times and I hope yet again. It's helped that a good friend has lived in Barcelona for about 25 years, and it's helpful knowing you know someone local when you're not, but we'd have been seduced back in any case. We will never see most of it, but the parks, the works of Gaudi, the museums (make the Picasso Museum an absolute must). The Ramblas, which is so much more than a boulevard. It's a real artery at the heart of the city.
