We touched down in London with a few days planned there to do another visit to the British Museum, but especially to spend time with David Sorsoli, our good friend, spare child, and former Blue Heron Publishing intern. We defaulted to the small hotel on Gower Street where we'd stayed on our first trip to Britain. The whole visit here was short, but we enjoyed it, though the hotel had gotten run down. That's actually quite an understatement. Fond memories foundered on its rocky shore.
However, we had a great time with our friend and his partner and once more failed to see much of the fantastic museum. I probably won't get another visit. However, I've finally seen their major thefts of antiquities from Rome, Greece, etc. And their magnificent displays of their islands' histories are mesmerizing—and a major reason why I haven't gotten further.
I now had been in London twice, and I was amused at that made me feel like familiarity with the city despite my major ignorance. Somehow, though, it was much easier to navigate, a tiny map in my head from that first time 12 years before. We had just enough time to take a couple of short walks, with the last being all the way to St Pancras Station dragging our wheeled luggage.
Our plan was to take the train through the Chunnel to Paris, enjoy a brief visit there with Penny Allen, and then meet up with Robin and Donna Cody in Dijon, where we'd spend time with a good friend of theirs who would acculturate us and spruce up the French of the other three. I hoped to learn a word or two.
