Uzes has a wonderful old town center where the market is held twice weekly and people otherwise congregate at the cafes or around the central fountain. Our house was only a couple of blocks away and we got to the market as early as possible. By doing that, we discovered a wonderful custom: before the official opening time, the town's elderly were welcome to shop without competing with crowds, which also meant that they had first choice on the fantastic produce and other goods. We were quite content to wander and watch as the marketplace came to life and the cafes on the edges filled. We also learned that the two days offered somewhat different things, with one day showcasing more plants and dry goods than the other.
Our house sharing offered its own variety, with each set of new guests giving us a fresh perspective on the town and the market, but also encouraging us to see new sides of this ancient city that had been saved from modernization in the 1960s that would have destroyed its charm and historical significance.
When Tony Midson and Maggie Herrington arrived, we took new hikes around the town, including the castle at the center and the marvelous, small botanical garden tucked in a corner on the hillside on the opposite side of the market.
