We were enchanted and fascinated at nearly every turn on the drive from the valley to Montaigne's place, and we particularly wanted to explore the Roman ruins preserved in Moncaret. When we got there, it was quickly obvious there was more to this small place than the ruins and their museum. We were lucky that we had to park some distance from the museum and the concentration of excavated ruins because the whole town was built around the remains of the Roman pieces—everything from fences and foundations to the church is built upon the foundations of a Roman temple, as was common. As the photos below make obvious, we had this place entirely to ourselves.
