Hey, don't be disappointed that you can't see the farmer. He chased us off his land before I could discreetly take a picture, but here's the scene before he showed up. We'd been cruising around checking out sights on the Vézère River between Lemeuil, where we were staying, and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, where the caves and museums are clustered. We needed a break and Linny was anxious to do some drawing. We noticed a small farming village with a road open down to the banks of the Vézère, which was high and muddy with spring flood. I could see some interesting caves across the river and the small road took us to the river's edge next to a field of young corn plants. We saw no signs prohibiting access, so we parked and Linny got busy with her art while I wandered the edges of the river with the camera.
We were there more than half an hour when a small truck come bouncing down the lane toward us. It was farmer Juan with a small yard rake in the truck bed. He indicated to us that we were trespassing and while we were gathering our things and getting into the car, he proceeded to rake the short grass around us. A video would have been appropriate, but not for him.
The river is lined with caves, and many like these have been continually used for ages. In fact, there are likely some archaeologically valuable caves that are invisible because houses and barns were built out from them.
