We often blunder into our good fortune. If we had come here in high season—only a week or so later—we'd have faced crowds, lines, and no hope of visiting a cave. But we got admission to two of them, plus we had the archaeological institute museum to ourselves and it was nearly that way at the big natural history museum in the middle of Les Eyses. It was even easy to get space on beautiful restaurant terraces. The weather was stunning, but would soon become humid until late September. The days may no be as long, but it was comfortable, beautiful, and more affordable.
The valley walls are lined with caves, both those now national treasures and parks and those still privately owned. All along the river we saw barns, sheds, and houses fronting caves.

Again, Les Dalles.
